Co-Development of Renewable Energy Projects by French Firm Voltalia in Uzbekistan

The Uzbekistan government and the French renewable energy company, Voltalia have agreed to jointly build renewable energy projects with a combined output of between 400 MW and 500 MW.
As part of the cooperation, 60MW/240 MWh of battery storage, 200 MW of solar, and 200 MW of wind capacity, will all be developed.

As part of the cooperation, 60MW/240 MWh of battery storage, 200 MW of solar, and 200 MW of wind capacity, will all be developed. The Voltalia and the Uzbek Ministry of Energy will choose the project locations together.

The cluster will be able to produce 1 TWh of clean energy annually, which will be sufficient to supply more than 800,000 people with their energy needs. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is supporting the proposed projects, and development on them is scheduled to begin in 2026.

“We are very proud to support the energy transition in Uzbekistan,” stated Sébastien Clerc, CEO of Voltalia. This cluster initiative, which integrates three different technologies, is unique to the area.

“We want Uzbekistan to make use of our extensive experience in multi-energy clusters, which stems from extremely large projects, such as Serra Branca in Brazil (wind and solar) or smaller ones, like Toco in French Guiana (solar plus storage).”

The cooperation between the Uzbek Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Investments and Foreign Trade (MIFT) and Voltalia is a three-way one.

The Uzbek government wants to increase the nation’s energy security and reach 8 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2026, with a further increase to 12 GW by 2030. Voltalia announced intentions to build a solar photovoltaic cluster in Minas Gerais, Brazil, with a capacity of more than 1.5 GW in June of this year.

Additionally, the company is building huge solar clusters in the Brazilian states of Bahia and Rio Grande do Norte, with potential capacities of 2.4GW and more than 1GW, respectively.
