HCG Hospital Chain Installs 2.25 MW Solar Power Plant

Highlights :

  • The solar plant will generate 45 lakh units (3.265MWp) of clean electricity annually, offsetting 3300 tons of carbon emissions.
  • The 2.25MW solar installation is expected to reduce up to 70% of energy expenditure at two hospitals in Karnataka.

Hospitals in India have been recognising the many advantages of installing solar panels, such as curbing electricity bills since healthcare is an energy intensive industry.

Among the most recent hospitals to take the solar route is Healthcare Global Enterprises Ltd (HCG), which is among the largest cancer care hospital chains in India. In a bid to conserve energy and promote green initiatives towards sustainable healthcare and decreased carbon footprint, the hospital chain has installed a 2.25 MW solar power plant in Karnataka’s Jagaluru Village, situated in the Davangere district. The power plant, spread across 7.2 acres of land, is an initiative by the hospital to optimise energy and achieve zero emissions. This is phase 1 of the solar power project that has been implemented at HCG’s flagship center in Bengaluru KR Road and HCG Suchirayu Hospital in Hubli.

The said plant will generate power capacity worth 1040 lakh units over a period of 25 years. At the same time, it will also bring down carbon emissions by 76,200 metric tons. As far as the savings on power bill is concerned, the initiative will lead to average annual savings of up to Rs 4.2 crore. During the implementation of phase 2 of the plan in the coming time, the hospital chain will implement the initiative across all its centers in other regions.

Speaking on the energy conservation initiative Dr. B S Ajaikumar, Executive Chairman, Healthcare Global Enterprises Ltd said, “Maintaining our planet’s ecosystems is imperative for creating a healthier world for the coming generations and what better sector than healthcare to recognize the criticality of this need. HCG is happy to steer this landmark solar-powered sustainability initiative across our network which will undoubtedly make a lasting contribution to our healthcare sustainability goals and objectives.”

CleanMax Enviro Energy Solutions, a leading firm known for installing solar panels in the C&I sector, has served as the implementation partner for this project. The firm will be lending support to the hospital in O&M and EPC services.

HCG maintains that in addition to offering state-of-the-art medical technologies for cancer treatment, it has always been dedicated to preserving energy and going the environment-friendly way by driving efforts towards reducing carbon footprint.

Two years ago, HCG NCHRI, Nagpur, became among first hospitals in India to install a 525 kVA solar plant.
