Indi Energy – a startup that has sprung out of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, has won the prestigious National Startup Awards 2022 in the category of ‘Energy Storage.’ National Startup Award 2022 was presented to the India based start-ups that are most promising and innovative. The certificate of commendation was presented by Piyush Goyal, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry. The National Startup Award honours businesses that delve in innovative and ground-breaking solutions in the country. These solutions also enable the sustainable economic development of India and are also providers of work and employment. Also, this is the third edition of the National Startup Award. Indi Energy specializes in the production of Sodium-Ion batteries. The company claims that its sodium-ion batteries are popular for high energy density, low cost, and high safety. Indi Energy says that its batteries are a strong and viable alternative to the lithium-ion batteries that are costly and the resource is also scarce. Piyush Goyal said in his address at the event, “India is now the third largest ecosystem for start-ups in the world. And this dream would not have been possible without the launch of Digital India. I congratulate each of you for taking that one step towards becoming a developed nation.” At present, IIT Roorkee is supporting more than 130 startups through the Technology Incubation and Entrepreneurship Development Society (TIDES) and I-Hub Divyasampark. IIT Roorkee director Prof KK Pant said on the occasion, “The National Startup Award 2022 is among the most prestigious awards in the Indian start-up ecosystem. IIT Roorkee is committed to providing hand-holding support to start-ups founded by IITR faculty and students. Further, the ecosystem is continuously being developed to nurture new ideas and innovation in science and technology.” Indi Energy looks to establish five alternative energy storage company worldwide to enable energy independence. It claims that its sodium-ion batteries are simple in design, easy to manufacture and sustainable & eco-friendly in making. Indi Energy also claims to have achieved world’s highest performance in Hard Carbon (HC) for Sodium-ion batteries, made from bio-waste / agricultural waste.
