Ioniq 5: India’s First Global Battery Electric Platform from Hyundai

Hyundai Motors India, the second largest auto seller in India, continues to firm up its EV plans for the country.

With the release of its future model, the Ioniq 5, which is scheduled to make its world debut at the Auto Expo in January of next year, Hyundai Motor India said that it will bring its global dedicated battery electric vehicle platform to the nation. The Ioniq 5 will be the brand’s first vehicle in the nation to be built on the electrified Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). 

Hyundai Motor India MD & CEO Unsoo Kim stated in a statement, “With the introduction of E-GMP to India, we will be able to provide consumers with sophisticated battery electric vehicles, derived from a platform that is modular, scalable, and versatile. E-GMP, which was conceptualized and developed to pivot the future revolution of electric mobility, would usher in a new league of electric vehicles for the new-age customers in India.”

In the domestic market, the automaker only offers one electric vehicle, the Kona Electric. The South Korean car giant revealed intentions to invest over Rs 4,000 crore to introduce six electric vehicles in India by 2028 last year. Over the next few years, the business intends to release a variety of models based on both its current lineup and brand-new automobiles based on its global platform, or “E-GMP.” 

In India, the company’s lineup of six battery electric cars (BEVs) will target both the mass market and mass premium markets. The E-GMP platform from the firm can support batteries with a huge capacity of up to 77.4 kWh.

Earlier, Hyundai Motor signed a strategic partnership with Tata to develop an electric vehicle charging stations network and amplify EV adoption in India to install 60 kW DC charging stations at 34 EV dealerships of Hyundai in 29 cities.
