Powin Energy to Supply 800MWh Battery Storage to Borrego

Borrego, a leading solar PV and energy storage developer based in America, has signed an agreement with Oregon-based Powin Energy to supply the battery storage systems worth 800MWh.

Borrego had traditionally dealt in operations and maintenance (O&M) and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) segments of the renewable energy business. It’s better known in the industry for its solar PV activities. But since 2016, the company has added 490MWh of energy storage in its portfolio. The storage business is mainly housed within the company’s utility-scale and commercial and industrial battery storage business. These energy storage projects are either in design, construction or operational already.

In February this year, Powin Energy had announced that it had signed agreements with four developers other than Borrego, for the supply of 5.8 GWh of battery energy storage systems ( BESS) for the period of 2022-24.

Since its formation, Powin has built 2,000MWh of BESS business. From February, Powin has contracted for the delivery of the battery energy storage systems of more than three times its current portfolio.

Borrego will employ Powin’s Stack750E battery storage stack product for its projects. Powin says that Stack750E is a modular stack solution and the product is a great fit into the Centipede hardware platform of the company. This Centipede platform is based on combining several multiple battery storage units.

Powin claims that up to 200MWh of storage can be combined into a single acre footprint with Centipede. This platform was introduced by Powin in November 2021.

The Stack750E is promoted as a great option  for 2-4 hour duration applications. Powin had said recently that its Centipede hardware will be manufactured by Celestica – the original equipment manufacturer – in its facilities in Mexico. This brings Powin Energy’s assembly and testing closer and in proximity with the major demand centres of North America.
