Siemens Gamesa Wind Turbine Claims to Break Energy Generation Record

Highlights :

  • SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbine prototype generated 359 MWh of energy in a time period of 24 hours.
  • Siemens Gamesa said that the serial production of the turbine is planned for 2024.

Siemens Gamesa has said that one of its offshore wind turbines has broken the record of most power produced by a single turbine in one day. The company held that its SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbine prototype generated 359 MWh of energy in a time period of 24 hours. This capacity of electricity, the turbine maker says, is the most power that a single wind farm turbine has produced ever over in one day.

Siemens Gamesa added that the energy produced (359 MWh) can make a mid-sized electric car to run about 1.8 million kms.

The previous record for highest energy production was held by another turbine giant GE. Haliade-X offshore wind turbine prototype of GE, that was installed at Sif Maasvlakte-2 in the Port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. This turbine in November 2020 had produced 312 MWh of electricity.

It was next year in November 2021 that Siemens Gamesa had fixed its SG 14-222 DD prototype offshore wind turbine in the test centre in Østerild, Denmark. The prototype began to generate electricity in December 2021.

Siemens Gamesa mentioned that SG 14-222 DD turbine model comes with a 14 MW capacity that can reach up to 15 MW when its Power Boost function is employed. The turbine model has a 222 metres diameter rotor, 108 metres long blades and a swept area of 39,000 square meters. Siemens Gamesa held that the turbine is designed for all wind speeds offering high profitability with reduced risks and there is an increase of over 25 per cent in AEP compared to its predecessor.

Siemens Gamesa got its first order for the SG 14-222 DD from German energy company RWE for its 1.4 GW Sofia offshore wind farm situated in the United Kingdom. The 882-MW Moray West wind farm off Scotland coast will also feature SG 14-222 DD turbines.

Taiwan’s Hai Long offshore wind projects Taiwan and 2,640 MW Dominion Energy Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project in the USA will also have the same model. Siemens Gamesa said that the serial production is planned for 2024.
