500 Government Schools In Telangana To Have Rooftop Solar By March

Highlights :

  • More than 100 government schools have already been solarised.
  • TSREDCO has issued work orders for another 453 schools; in total 1,521 government run schools will have rooftop solar installations.

After solarisinga 100 schools in Telangana, the state government now targets to put solar panels on the buildings of 500 schools by the coming March. The objective is to decentralise electricity generation and make the schools free from power shedding challenges.

In 2022, the Telangana government had said that it aims at installing rooftop solar in 1,521 government run schools in 12 districts. The total cost was projected at Rs 32 crore.

Officials said installation of solar panels would not only help in bringing down the annual power bills of the schools to a large extent but also help them in earning money through the excess power generated and transferred to the grid.

Sources say that the state run schools are witnessing rise in the employment and use of computer systems and related IT facilities as the classrooms are getting interactive of late. This has resulted directly into more electricity consumption; hence, higher electricity bills. The rooftop solar panel installation will help bring down the bill burden of schools and also supply them with uninterrupted power.

Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TSREDCO) – the nodal agency for the task – has installed rooftop solar in more than 100 government schools. According to reports, it has issued work orders for additional 453 schools.

As per reports, the state government looks to complete the entire project of solarizing 1,521 schools in the coming few months only.

In September 2011, TSREDCO called for bids for rooftop solar installations. It has also finalized 11 vendors who are installing rooftop solar systems between the capacity range of 2 KW and 5 KW in the government schools. Southern Power Distribution Company Limited is looking after the installation of 916 schools out of the total project and Northern Power Distribution Company Limited is handling the other 605 schools.

A month ago, TSREDCO had issued a request for bids to purchase 50 MW of monocrystalline passivated emitter and rear contact (MONO-PERC) solar modules under the domestic content requirement (DCR) and non-DCR categories for use in the grid-connected rooftop solar program (Phase-II) and other government projects.
