Osmania University Mulls 1 MW Solar Power at Campus

Highlights :

  • The total cost of the solar power project in Osmania University is expected to be about Rs 5 – 6 crore.
  • The funds are being eyed from the grants that Telangana state budget allocated recently.

The renewable energy in Telangana continues to have a solid run. In a new development, the Osmania University (OU) is mulling to set up a solar power plant in its campus that will allow it to meet the power requirements.

According to reports, the Osmania University will install solar power panels that will produce about 1 MW of green electricity that will provide power to the entire campus, college divisions, administrative office and other buildings in the campus.

Currently, Osmania University is spending a monthly amount of nearly Rs.1 crore in the electricity bills. The generation of solar based electricity in the campus will help the varsity to reduce the electricity bills and also generate revenue for itself by selling the excess green electricity to the power grids.

For setting up the solar power plant, Osmania University is discussing the possibility with the Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation, Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited and National Thermal Power Corporation.

The total cost of the solar power project in Osmania University will be about Rs 5 – 6 crore. The funds are expected to come from the grants that the Telangana state government allocated in the budget for the development of infrastructure in universities. The government had allocated Rs 500 crore for infra development in the budget.

As per reports, Osmania University is eying about Rs 80-90 crores from the state allocation for grants. It already has land available to support the installation of the solar project.

Solarizing Place of Education

TSREDCO had recently solarized 100 schools in the state through rooftop solar panels and it has issued similar orders for 453 additional schools in the state. The Telangana government now targets to put solar panels on the buildings of 500 schools by the coming March.

The state government looks to complete the entire project of solarizing 1,521 schools in the coming few months.
